In all of these controversies, we see a new and more acute version of the old opposition between Thomism and Scotism, and, beneath this, the old debate between the Alexandrian and Antiochene schools; and, at the foundation of it all, the opposition between Eastern thought—which, when made absolute, becomes a supernaturalistic theopanism—and Western thought—which, when made absolute, eventuates in a naturalistic pantheism.
